Guide to Comic Spider-Man Action Figures (updated end September 2016)

Hasbro has been churning out Marvel Legends fast and furious this year.  And with a Spider-Verse wave announced, spider fans have a lot to look forward to.  For this update, I have added the Space Venom BAF Ultimate Spidey (teen) Peter Parker figure.  With what was announced so far, I guess the next update should be the black Spidey figure based off the Pizza Spidey mold.  Really looking forward to that as the last proper black Spidey figure was from the Red Hulk BAF wave.

For this guide, I will focus on the red/blue (red/black) Spidey costumes and black costumes, but the figures will be shown in reverse chronological order, roughly from the latest figure to the oldest.  I will also provide my views on what I feel are the pros and cons of the figure.  I will also try to link to the artist who inspired the figure to the best of my knowledge.

Again, as you all know, Spidey is probably one of the most made action figures, my guide will only cover the 6 inch scale, articulated (good useful articulated figures with no action feature) and comic red/blue (red/black) and black costumes action figures.  And all these figures that I am covering are figures I actually owned but since I am not such a good photographer, most of the pictures are obtained from the reference sites mentioned below.  Figures from movies, alternate costumes (e.g. Morales, Iron-Spidey), knock-offs are not covered in this guide.

Toy Review - Marvel Legends Space Venom BAF Ultimate Spider-Man Peter Parker

Today, I will be taking a look at the Space Venom BAF wave Ultimate Spider-Man Peter Parker figure.  Hasbro has made teen body so that it is more suitable for the Ultimate Spider-Man’s teenage character.

At first glance it looks very much like a shrunken down version of Pizza Spider-Man figure released earlier.  Let’s see whether this is the case.

Toy Review - Marvel Legends Captain America Civil War 3-Pack Spider-Man

After watching Captain America: Civil War movie, I was so looking forward to this figure, because I find Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spidey amazing (pun intended) and I cannot wait for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

So let’s see how this figure fares.

Toy Review - Superior Spider-Man’s Mechanical Arms and Wrist Communicators from Shapeways (Designer: Strangefate)

Today I will not be reviewing a figure, but a custom “upgrade” kit for the Marvel Legends Infinite Series Superior Spider-Man figure from the BAF Ultimate Green Goblin wave.  This kit includes the mechanical arms from the backpack and the wrist gadgets (communicators for the Spider-Bots?) for Superior Spider-Man aka Doc Ock Spidey.

Toy Review - SDCC 2016 Marvel Legends Raft Box Set Spider-Man

First of all, this review is dedicated to Glenn Webb, who unfortunately has just passed away unexpectedly on 26 August 2016.  He is such an inspiration and I was so looking forward to his review of this figure.  So I will try to cover what I think he would have covered if he were to review this.

Remembering Glenn Webb... R.I.P.

I try to keep my posts toy/ Spidey related.  But today is a very sad day and I feel compelled to do a post to remember a great guy, a friend.  It affected me more than I thought it would.  One of my favourite toy reviewers, Glenn Webb,  passed on unexpectedly in his sleep.  When I saw the post on Facebook, I thought it was a sick joke, and I hope it was, because I just saw his latest video hours back, but then more posts came and many other YouTubers confirm the tragic news.  We have lost a truly charismatic brother of the community today.

I don't know Glenn personally, but I have been following his videos for years now.  I have communicated with him a few times, and he is truly an inspiration.  Love his customs and his passion and sense of humour that he injected into all his reviews and videos.

Glenn, you left behind countless of toy collectors and fans inspired by your passion.  And it would be very hard for us to fill this void.  But thoughts are with your family and friends, and I hope you find peace, and all the toys you would ever want at toy aisles that goes on forever.

I will miss you my brother.  Thank you for everything.  Rest in peace.  Mmmmmmm, bye.

Toy Review - Medicom MAFEX The Amazing Spider-Man 2 No. 003

I have read good things about the MAFEX series by Medicom, especially the Amazing Spider-Man 1 figure.  However, I was not really into the costume in the first movie and also the secondary market price was on the high side for me.  When the second movie came out, I was pleasantly surprised at how much they have referenced back to the comic costume design, in fact, I think it is probably one of the closest it has ever been for Spidey (yes I know the Civil War Spidey costume has potential).  This figure also has a DX (deluxe) version with additional Andy Garfield head, additional accessories and a magnetic backdrop, but I decided to get this figure to see if the deluxe version is worth getting.

I am particularly drawn to the articulation of this figure, so without further ado, let’s take a look at this figure!
